Art Knowledge: Lesson
5 _ Breaking Up Picture Spaces
Drawing or painting pictures does not
have to be complicated. In many pictures the entire composition may have
only a dozen or fewer major areas. I call these areas the primary break
up of the picture.
When you study photos or paintings
by artists you find the picture content is usually quite simple.
But, we get so distracted by the details (color, textures and tones) within
the primary areas, and we are put off and think the images more than we
can do easily.
Your knowledge of descriptive
lines will bring out the character and the outlines of the areas (forms)
that you are observing. Interesting outlines will make your picture come
alive visually and impress people of your observation skills.
*Proportions have
to do with the size of one object or space as compared to another.
HINT: If you mentally sub-divide your picture frame into quarters it is
easier to determine general size and placement of forms.
Here are some pictures which
contain very simple area break up. They can be interpreted with a dozen
or less spacial zones.

Most beginning artists look at a
scene and notice the details first. This usually causes panic.
But do not despair, the solution in the E-Z drawing method is
to notice the areas first that divide the picture space into regions.

ACTIVITIES FOR THIS LESSON
1.Use a viewfinder Click
to print a viewfinder to cut out
Create a grouping of common objects (Still Life)
You can choose fruits, flowers, vegetables, tools, any kind of
common objects.
2. Interpret a picture or an outdoor scene
Sketch out the main area break up of an outdoor scene using your
viewfinder again to make a selection.
Find a photo that has interesting picture content, interesting
subject and grouping, sketch out the area break up (map) of the
photo.

SKILLS TO WORK ON IN THIS LESSON: Continue
drawing the E-Z way to produce straight and curves Applying tone (gradations
light to dark) brush tonal shading using dry medium (chalk, pastel)
Recognizing areas and picture space, Recognizing kinds of picture
space, flat 2 dimensional, shallow 3 dimensional, and deep 3 dimensional
space.
Using a viewfinder to form your own compositions. Composing a picture
using the entire space

These two Picasso compositions
reveal a design where the forms are flat in appearance. The picture areas
join edge to edge like a map where each state adjoins another

ACTIVITIES
FOR LESSON 5
Use a viewfinder made from paper or a camera viewfinder. Use your
viewfinder to position objects. Use your pencil to draw the primary breakup
that you see within your viewfinder. You can try finishing the pictures
by using watermarkers to redraw the ourlinwa of the spaces. Within the
primary areas, Add detail, or add textures (using a marker)
or or add areas of solid *contrasting colors inside each space.
Contrasting means not the same color as the outline color.
Places
to see the work of great artists.
