CALUMETS
AND OTHER NATIVE AMERICAN ARTIFACTS
Father Bieren's Historical Rare Collection St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fairmount, North Dakota is the site of an attractive pair of monuments created as a church project in 1932. This collection was designed to showcase the lifetime-collection of geological rareities and rare Native American artifacts found in the region The pastor at this time was Father Bierens an avid collector of rare stones and Indian artifacts. These were beautifully crafted into two matching monuments by parishioner, C. J. Krump. Featured inlayed in the display are agates, jasper, petrified woods, pyrites, multi- colored quartz crytal, and marble, to name but a few. Indian artifacts are displayed amid the colored stones. These include "peace pipes" or calumets of several designs as well as war mallets and grinding stones found in the region at the time the soil was first being turned over in the early years of Fairmount's history. |
