HOW  TO  DEVELOP AN IDEA  LIST

Ideas: Primary Breakup: The content of Pictures.
In the attempt to become more creative, the first consideration for you and me as  artists  is deciding what to do. What will be subject of my work? What image will go into the big blank space?

The suggestions offered in this lesson describe how you can change your thinking and your ideas to make visual creations  more interesting and more creative.
One of the tell-tale signs of an amateur artist is that pictures often lack  in creative content, they are not very interesting and do not attract the notice of viewers. The reason, I believe can be traced to this visual content or the lack thereof, which I will refer to after this as primary breakup objects.  What this amounts to is a basic check list of  content in a  picture. A less creative, less interesting, picture will have a short list. I will show you a sample of the idea building process where we actually think about these things.

Sample of how to develope an  Idea List:

What will I choose for my theme?            I choose "Watermellon"

Primary Breakup Object 1   A watermellon
(If we stop with that one watermellon it will be very boring.)
Primary Breakup Object 2    another watermellon, watermellon 2
Primary Breakup Object 3    another watermellon, watermellon 3
Primary Breakup Object 4    another watermellon, watermellon 4
Primary Breakup Object 5    another watermellon, watermellon 5
Primary Breakup Object 6    garden space
Primary Breakup Object 7    vines and leaves (good detail here)
Primary Breakup Object 8    a fence
Primary Breakup Object 9    tree 1
Primary Breakup Object 10   tree 2
Primary Breakup Object 11    tree 1
Primary Breakup Object 12   garden tools, rake, how, fork
Primary Breakup Object 13   sky and clouds

With the list above we can organize our picture, including each object listed. The use of the space, the size and position of these objects, and the amount of detail is another thing to consider as you do each.  But this problem is focusing on PRIMARY BREAK UP. Therefore, do not worry too much about detail today.

EXCERCISE:  ON A TYPING SIZE PAGE  DRAW THE ABOVE EXAMPLE IN YOUR OWN BEST WAY. DO NOT OMIT ANY ITEM ON THE LIST.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT:
The task of developing a creative idea is a work of IMAGINATION:  Imagination is about THINKING! This work sheet will help you to think through any Idea or Theme that you might wish to choose. Theme is the overall idea or story to be expressed. You control how much development and detail you will have in any creative idea you develop.  Good ideas often never get to be Good Art because of lack of development!
This worksheet will help you in developing  a more interesting and creative idea, step by step.

ANALYZE AN INTERESTING PICTURE OR PHOTO

FIND AN INTERESTING PHTOFirst you will notice it has a theme or subject: You will also notice that Photos have realistic 3-dimensional space. Sometimes the space will be deep, showing a great distance and more content in its space;  sometimes it will be shallow, such as a close up view in such cases there may be fewer objects of content:   List  the main  objects which make up the content of a photo .
