Here are some sculpture and other 3d craft projects.
Each of these assignments will emphasize composition in 3 dimensional depth or MASS.

DESIGN ONE
Cardboard Module Design

This design produces an entirely visual effect. It is not descriptive nor symbolic. It is about the appearance of surfaces.
Rhythm, Movement and Contours: TIME: 6 DAYS
This first design will teach us about the visual effect of "Rhythm" "Surface," and "Contour"

1. The process involves cutting "*modules" from corrugated cardboard.
2. Each module will have a simple Shape and Outline.
3. Multiple exact copies of each module will be cut.
4. Each Module group is placed together in a mass corrugated edge up.
5. Each module group is position on a background support and pasted down.
6. This involves cutting with blades.
7. Exercise Caution:!!!!!!!! Danger of Injury.!!!!!!
Use of a template or a module: A template is a simple model or pattern which can be copied and repeated. A module is very much like a template except that modules are designed to repeated numerous times to create a completed structure.
Movement is the design affect of travel and direction through space.
Movements can relate to surface changes. As in this project. You can contrast the direction and flow of surfaces, flat, curved, angled up, angled down, etc.
When these modules are pasted down they create both a directional movement and a rhythmic surface contour which comes from the continuity of similar edges or surfaces.

DESIGN TWO
Found Object Design:
Create a *figurative Object that is constructed from a variety of found objects. *Figurative forms represent known things. An example of figurative would be a human or an animal figure.

DESIGN 2: Found Object Construction 7 Days to Complete this projectThere are a couple of things which make this a difficult project. First, It requires that you supply materials which means homework for you. You will need to take time, to look and to scrutinize and to image and to scrounge. Don't put this off. Time will click away and if you are not complete, you will not get credit for the assignment.There will not be an extension of time to do this project.
Second, the materials that you find need to be joined, connected or secured in some way. This will require some problem solving on your part. What is the best way to join these objects or materials together. Your selections will dictate how you will need to do this.

DESIGN THREE Mask Design: An Expressive Mask form created from the side of a cardboard box.. You will use an antiquing paint method with acrylic and decorate the mask using materials or appliqué. 3D DESIGN No. 3 Mask Design - - 9 days to make.

The Mask is the original magic image. When we wear a mask we assume the personality and attributes of the image of the mask. African, aboriginal and Native American masks were used in connection with magic spirit rituals and employed supernatural powers to control the outcome of events in life, create fertility, bring prosperity, good harvest, or to act to destroy an enemy of the tribe or clan. We will not use these masks for evil or malevolent purposes but to serve a bold and expressive images to possibly give form to alter egos, ( the image of our unconscious selves.) The concept of "Persona" comes from the mask. The "personality" is the mask identity we project to the world in our everyday life and relationships.

Construction:
1. The supporting shape comes from the corner of a corrugated cardboard box:.
2. The structure of features like the eyebrows, nose, wrinkles, or hair, is built up using "bunched up" slightly- moist, toweling. These masses and contours can be taped in place until the glue tissue layers make them secure.
3. The final "skin" of tissue paper or napkin paper is layered over it. This skin of paper Mache' must be handled carefully to make a seamless smooth skin. Three or four layers will make it rock hard.
4. The adhesive is white school glue (elmer's glue type) mixed about 50/50. Toilet paper can be used for the final surface but where more bulk is needed, use semii moist, paper toweling to build the form.

Finishing treatment is open to your imagination.
Applied decoration with surface textures offer rich possibilities. Such textures made from natural materials like sea shells were popular with native mask makers. Any material can be used for ornament, e.g. buttons, beads, rope, chording, macaroni, etc. etc.

Painted effects. Make sure the paint or pattern does not detract from the structure. Transparencies and antique effects are more subtle than bright paint effects. There are two ways of making an antique look. 1. Use a transparent dark wash (acrylic) over a base coat which is a light color. or 2. Use a lightly rubbed on light color over a base coat which is a dark color. (any dark color or black). Here is where metallics are very effective. Caution: apply very, very lightly, use fingers.
Fabric or fiber to suggest hair or decoration: Raffia, cord, string, yarns. To connect use a well crafted design system, such as knotted yarn drawn through holes.

DESIGN FOUR
Clay Relief:
Making a representational image on a base of clay. To avoid firing problems, do not make the clay base more than 1 inch thick. Additive and Subtractive Clay Relief Design - - 6 days to make.1. To make a clay relief we can either add clay bits or parts to the clay while it is still moist (additive method) or use a clay carving tool to remove clay (subtractive method.)
2. Carving *slightly damp clay is very easy as compared to stone or wood, but still requires planning and even drawing skill.
3. Once you have identifyed your theme and content you will need to "draw" outlines for the image. Then continue to develop your design by adding or subtracting clay.
4. Loop tools remove clay a bite at a time.
5. It is okay to leave tools marks in clay. It speak of the character of the material and provides textural interest.
*Note: you can not add damp clay to dry clay., so you will need to maintain a slight amount of moisture in the clay over the time you are working with it. In order to do this you will need a air tight bag and monitor the moisture each day to keep it a the moisture level you require.
Note "leather hard" clay has the same color as wet clay but has no elasticity. Leather hard clay is the best for very sharp and clear carving and can even produce a glossy texture is scraped or rubbed. Leather hard clay turns very quickly into too dry a clay. Therefore, you may need some attention to maintaining moisture level.

Creative Challenge:
A clay relief may be done to express any subject or theme. The selection of your idea will be most important and challenging part of this assignment. It will be up to you to find a theme or content for the carving. In order to make this image strong and expressive be sure to give this some thought. If you are stuck for an idea, interpret a picture subject. YOU MUST MAKE A SKETCH AND HAVE IT APPROVED BEFORE YOU START
